ecancermedicalscience was born due to the rapidity of research development at the European Institute Oncology, coupled with the onset of Open Access publishing.

ecancermedicalscience is the online cancer Journal from The European Institute of Oncology.

The Institute was established in May 1994 to implement an innovative model for health and advanced research in the international oncology field - a perfect home for an online cancer journal.

The original idea behind the development of the Institute, encompassed Professor Veronesi's vision to see an institute established in Italy, with a mission committed to European research. From basic laboratory research that tries to grapple with the genetic roots of cancer - through to advanced clinical research such as testing new drugs. All with the unifying goal which is to treat patients more effectively.

The Institute became a: Research Hospital and Treatment Centre (IRCCS/ Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico) through the Ministerial Decree issued in January 1996. The European Institute of Oncology adopts the non-profit private-law organisation model as a hospital that doesn't seek profit, but is devoted to the most advanced research and also treats patients.
